Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Ragged School Museum, Copperfield Road - geograph.org.uk - 1525416.jpg |
English: The Ragged School Museum, Copperfield Road Dr Barnardo opened his Copperfield Road Ragged Schools (one for boys, one for girls) in these old warehouse premises in 1877. It was the largest of its kind and operated as both a day school and a Sunday school, also providing evening classes, free meals and an annual holiday for hundreds of the poorest local children. It closed in 1908 and today is run as a museum by a charitable trust.
The cranes formerly used to hoist goods into the warehouse can still be seen but the pediment was added to make the school look more imposing. |
