PROCEEDINGS AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,21st FEBRUARY, 1862. Award of the Wollaston Medal. The Chairman, Sir Roderick Murchison, then addressed Mr.Godwin-Austen as follows:— Mr. Godwin-Austen,—Valuing as I do the services you haverendered to geological science, I consider myself very fortunate inoccupying this chair to perform the duty of the President in hisunavoidable absence, by placing the Wollaston Medal in your hands. Although there are two points in your numerous writings in whichI have differed from you, viz., your theory of the synchronism of theUpper Silurian and Devonian rocks, and your view of tho lacustrineor terrestrial nature of the Old Red Sandstone, yet even in theseviews I admire your originality of thought; whilst on all othergrounds I am bound to say that I am convinced of the soundness ofyour speculations. In truth, all your associates, as well as myself, are aware that youhave distinguished yourself during a long series of years by yoursuccessful inquiries
