eipt.—I have just received several specimens of the Palmof Hempstead from Mr. Pengelly. They undoubtedly belong to Sabalmajor. Two of the specimens have still the end of the petiole andthe base of the leaf. The rachis is 44 millims. broad at the base,very long, and gradually tapering (as the specimen figured in my Flora Tertiaria, vol. i. pi. 36. fig. 2). The rays are attached onboth sides; they wholly agree, in the insertion, form, and venation,with Sabal major, and indeed with the large form which Unger hadcalled Flabellaria maxima (Chloris Protogaea, pi. 12). This specieswholly differs from Flabellaria Lamanonis, Brongn., and thereforebelongs to a Palm which extended over the whole of Europe in theLower Miocene Period.—0. H.
