Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Public Elementary School (Council School) From 1909-1924, in Pye Lane; densely surrounded by trees on all sides and hence very difficult to photograph the building, which once used to be the Public Elementary School: a corrugated iron structure, built in 1909 and intended to be a temporary school, catering for up to 100 children, the school was in use for exactly 15 years. The building became known by the villagers as the 'Tin Tabernacle' and is now a private dwelling house. There were ongoing heating problems with stoves not lighting or classrooms being smoked out because of blocked chimneys. An entry in the log book, dated December 1917, tells of very cold temperatures and frozen ink. In May 1909, 33 children were enrolled; by 1922 there were 75 pupils and 67 in 1924 when the school was closed. http://www.plong.btinternet.co.uk/schools.htm#Primary%20School
