Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Pompeion in Kerameikos Cemetery on June 27, 2021.jpg |
English: Remains of the Pompeion (4th? cent. B.C.) in Kerameikos Cemetery. The word Pompeion derives from the Greek word "πομπή" which means procession. The building was related to the most important religious festival in ancient Athens, the Panathenaea, in honor of Athena, the goddess of Wisdom and patron deity of the city. This was the starting point of the procession which after following the course of the Panathenaic Way ended at the Parthenon on the Acropolis. |
