of thatmonth the first shovelful of earth was thrown out,without formal ceremony, and the foundation wascompleted on the eighth day of August. The exca-vation for the foundation was sixty feet square andhad a depth of eight feet below the surface of theground. The foundation was a solid mass of con-crete, reinforced at intervals of five inches with lay-ers of rods of twisted steel, placed eighteen inchesapart. At each of the four corners of the foundationarose six rods of twisted steel, which were securelyfixed in the concrete of the foundation, far below thesurface. Above the surface of the ground the foun-dation rose to a height of five feet, but graduallylessening in superficial area until at the top it reachedthe dimensions of twenty-eight feet square. The ma-terial taken from the excavation was then employedin raising the grade of the surrounding soil to thelevel of the foundation. It had firstbeen intended that these ceremonies should be held onthe fifteenth day of August, the anniversary of thesailing of the Mayflower from Southampton, but thedirectors were obliged to consent to a postponementon account of the inability of Governor Guild to bepresent, by reason of official engagemen
