of this extraordinary Company, and has been since enlarged at various times. Its front, thoughbelonging to a very hackneyed class, a mere portico with wings, isone of the best of its kind; but cannot be appreciated, from thenarrowness of the street, and the northern aspect—a disadvantagethat seems by a sort of fatality to attend all our best architecture. It is much to be regretted that the exteriors of buildings should nolonger be designed, as formerly, with some reference to the aspectand other circumstances of the site. It contains some remarkableworks of rude art and industry, as Chinese ivory carvings, Brahmanand Buddhist idols and mythological paintings, armour, and trophies.Tippoos organ, representing a tiger devouring an European, is verycurious. The music, produced on turning the handle, consists ofshrieks from the man, after every four of which, comes a growl fromthe beast. In fine contrast with this truly barbaric piece of royalfurniture, is a specimen of Roman art found under the site of thepresent building, and representing, curiously enough (in tessellatedwork), a female riding on a tiger. There are also here a collectionof fossils, a very rich library of Oriental MSS., and several portraitsand statues of the most eminent servants of the company. Excise Office, Old Broad St
