uthalf a dozen streets, the principal facing the seaand forming the esplanade, with a line of treesrunning along, giving it a cool and shady look.Verandahs cover the pavements, just as they doin New Zealand towns (so that, I suppose, youcan stare in the shop windows and be protectedfrom the sun and rain) ; they look, however,very ugly, these street verandahs, and I thinkit must be partly that which makes all the townsin New Zealand so hideous. But here in thehouses, &c, there seemed a sort of stuffiness,and in this matter it would be good for theinhabitants to copy the New Zealanders inhaving as much fresh air as possible. This is athing which, however, strikes you very differentlywhen you are in New Zealand in winter ; in allthe hotels and clubs every available window isalways open morning, noon, and night, and ifone ventures to remonstrate in anv way it islooked upon as a crime ! On the west of the town a good road leads upthe hill, where there are numerous villas ofpainted wood, one-storied, with verandahs andcorrugated iron roofs like you see for the mostpart in New Zealand ; they stand amidst theirown groves of tropical vegetation and look cooland cosy. From the top of the hill a fine viewis to be had of the sea and the rugged coastline, with jagged hills and peaks making acuriously irregular outline against the sky.
