g platforms of the railroad company,covering fourteen acres of ground. At thispoint the freight and passenger business ofthe road are separated, each running overits own tracks to destination. Newark, nine miles,—the first city inpopulation and wealth in New Jersey,—islocated in Essex county, on the right bankof the Passaic river, about four miles fromits entrance into Newark bay. It was settledin 1666 by emigrants from the State of Con-necticut, who came to this spot at theinvitation of Governor Carteret, the firstgovernor of New Jersey, to enjoy theirreligion—that of the Congregational church—without interference or hindrance. Theypurchased the site of the town from theIndians, and the deed of purchase, bearingdate July nth, 1667, is on record in the officeof the secretary of state, at Trenton. Theconsideration of this purchase was fiftydouble hands of powder, one hundred barsof lead, twenty axes, twenty coates, ten guns, Includes Hudson county. 46 THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD.
