(Junction ofMoshannon Branch Railroad, running toHoutzdale, distance six miles.) Dunbar, twenty-one miles. Steiners, twenty-three miles. Philipsburg, twenty-four miles, is inCentre county, and was founded in 1796,by Henry Phillips, of England, the eldestof three brothers who successively residedhere in charge of a large estate, and fromwhom the town takes its name. Emigrantswere brought from abroad to colonize theplace, and a screw factory, (said to be thefirst in the United States,) a forge, andnail factory established. These industrieswere too remote from the centres of tradeto prove profitable, and in time were aban-doned. The business of lumbering followed,and the dense pine forests covering the sur-rounding country have proved a source ofprosperity to the present time. The town contains two planing-mills,an extensive steam-tannery,a steam flour-mill,a foundry and machine-shop, and a numberof other industries. It has five churches,two public halls, a public library, two banks,good schools, and several hotels. Extensivedeposits of fire-clay exist in the vicinity.Population, 1086. (Junction of branchroad to Morrisdale, distance four miles.) Blue Ball, twenty-seven miles. Wallaceton, twenty-nine miles.—Asteam saw-mill is in operation here, and con-siderable lumbering is done in the vicinity.The village contains a public hall, and apopulation of about 160.
