The Arch Spring, a beautifulnatural curiosity, is in the immediatevicinity, being one of the series of won-ders which make the Sinking Springvalley so remarkable. There are threechurches in the village and a seminary foryoung ladies. Population, 263. Tyrone, two hundred and twenty-threemiles, is the first station in Blair county.It is a creation of the Pennsylvania Rail-road, and commenced its career as a townin 1849. Thisgrowth was still further stimulated by theconstruction of the Bald Eagle Valley andthe Tyrone and Clearfield Railroads; andnow the station is one of the most importantbetween Pittsburg and Philadelphia. Thetown was named after the Tyrone IronWorks, located about one mile east of it. Previous to and during the Revolutionarywar, Captain Logan, (not the Mingo chief,)a noted Indian, had his cabin at a largespring now within the limits of Tyrone.
