Description |
English: The Panch Mahal and some other rather fanciful palace buildings at Fathpur Sikri
Watercolour of the Panch Mahal at Fatepur Sikri from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Tughlikabad to Secundra Vol. VIII' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r. 1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15. Idealised view of the Panch Mahal and some other rather fanciful palace buildings at Fatehpur Sikri. In 1569, Mughal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) moved his capital from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri and commenced the construction of the palace and fort. The Panch Mahal, the multistoried palace complex on the left, is believed to be one of the royal residences within the fort. Inscribed below: 'The Emperor Acbar's own Quarters in the Fort of Futtipoor Seehnee.' |
