These bluffsas well as those more distant on the northern sideof the valley, are plainly visible from the cars.Before the road was built, this valley was thegreat highway of overland travel to Colorado,Utah, California, and Oregon. Immense trainsof wagons, heavily freighted, have passed over it,in tlieir slow and tedious journeyings towardsthe setting sun. Leaving the Missouri at differ-ent points, the routes nearly all converged in thePlatte Valley, and thence westward to their des-tination. The luxuriant grasses, and the prox-imity to water, made this the favorite route. Ithas also been the scene of deadly conflicts withthe savages, and the bones of many a wandererlie bleaching in the air, or are buried beneathsome rough and hastily-made mound near thebeaten road.
