The river risesin a small lake to which the name MadisonLake is given. From here the trail runsdue east to Shoshone Lake, which is one ofthe sources of Snake River, giving origin to themain stream. From the Upper Geyser Basin to Madison Lake, is about ten miles, and fromthis lake to the Shoshone Geysers, the distanceis about four miles. The trail is not very good,there being considerable fallen timber throughthe region to be traversed. Mount Blackmore.—This mountain, pre-vious to 1872, was practically unnamed and un-known. Withhim came his wife, who wasanxious to see some of thebeauties and wonders ofour famous YellowstoneNational Park. Thefatigue and hardships ofthe journey from Corinneto Bozeman, 600 miles ofstaging, proved too much.On arrival at Bozeman, shewas taken ill, and after asickness of but two days,she died. Her grave lies atthe foot of a mountainrange, from which thererises a grand peak, stand-ing up like a huge monu-ment to her memory. Tothis peak the party gave thename of Mt. Blackmore.The height above the sea is10,134 feet.
