rist. Tlie town of Auburn proper is situated belowthe station. It has a population of 1,000, twochurches, good schools, fine orchards, and is thecounty-seat of Placer County. It is one of theoldest towns in the State. It has three hotels,one of which is the Railroad House. Many ofits buildings are constructed of brick or stone,and grapes are extensively grown in the vicinity,and with great success. The Placer Herald is aweekly Democratic paper, and the Argus, aweekly Republican paper. From the point where the locomotive standsthe Sacramento River can be seen on the left,as also from other jioints as the train continueswestward. Soon after leaving the station, therailroad crosses Dutch Ravine, at the head ofwhich is Bloomer Cut, where the train passesthrough an interesting conglomerate, showing;a well-exposed stratum of boulders, sand andcoarse gravel.
