Or, if one desire to see the country and avoidthe ocean, let him take the Central Pacific Rail-road to Redding, and the stages of the C^aliforniaand Oregon Stage Company to Roseburg. Thewhole 375 miles of stage route is through themost beautiful, wild, and sublime scenery. Theroad follows the valley of the Sacramento Riverto its head-waters at the foot of Mt. Shasta, 14,-444 feet high, and ))asses along the base of thislofty, snow-capped and glacier-clad butte. (See Head-waters of tlie Sacramento and Mt. Shas-ta.)
