Yosemite train. A huge grizzly, caught when a cub in theLivermore range of hills, and caged near theplatform, is interesting as a harmless specimenof nature. THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD. (For full description of which sec page 310. San Joaquin Valley.—This great valleyhas the Sierra Nevada on the east, and the CoastRange on the west, is about 250 miles long, andfrom 20 to 150 miles wide. The area is 25,000square miles. The greater portion of the landis a sandy loam, easily tilled. There are but afew trees, but the farmers have begun to plantextensively. Frequent patches of the black,tenacious, alluvial soil, called ad^be, are found,in which the sun cracks, visible during sumnier,faintly suggest earthquakes. A hundred milesof wheat fields may be seen in the valley, brokenonly by roads and fences. This immense valley, with a surrounding beltof timber for lumber and fuel, coal, iron and theprecious metals bordering it, adapted for grow-ing the grains and fruits of two zones, is des-

The juicesof the grass are stored, the seeds ripened, andthe roots die, and seeds sprout again. San .lonqnin Brhhfe,—79 miles from SanFrancisco, is a station at the railroad crossing ofthe San Joaquin River. The channel is on thewest side, and in high water the country is over-flowed for miles up and down the river, reachingback from it almost to Bantas, the next station.Hantns,—75 miles from San Francisco, and30 feet above tide-water, is named for an oldfamily resident here.
