ed in October, 1874, andis one of the best paying roads for the invest-ment in all the country. The cars are exceed-ingly neat and comfortable, and the averagetime nearly twenty-five miles an hour. Thecourse is west, across the Humboldt Eiver,and then south up Pine Valley, a region ofsage brush, to Bullion—8 miles from Palisade. Next isEvans, simjaly a side track, with the CortezMountains on the west or right, and the Dia-mond Range opposite. Agriculture is limited,but cattle and sheep find extensive rangesamong the hills. Willards is 15 miles from Palisade, andHay Ranch 19 miles. Here are 2,500 acres ofmeadow land owned by the railroad company.About 1,000 tons of hay are cut and stored an-nually. From the terminus of the road atEureka, the company send hay by teams oftheir own to southeastern Nevada—as far asPioche. They employ from 300 to 400 mulesfor freighting purposes, and their ranch showsunmistakable signs of profit to the road. Box Springs—28 miles—is a signal station.
