It is the pioneerline of Utah proper, though the Union Pacificand Central Pacific Roads were completed firstthrough the magnificent generosity of the peopleof the United States. Early in May, 1869, theiron rails which bound the Continent togetherwere joined near Promontory, some 50 mileswest of Ogden. One week after this was done,work on the Utah Central began. The companywas organized on the 8th of March previous,Brigham Young being president. A largequantity of material for building railroads wasleft on hand, when the Union Pacific wasfinished to Promontory, and this was purchasedby the Utah Central Company. BrighamYoung had entered into a contract for gradingthe former road, from the head of Echo Canonto Ogden, and successfully accomplished thework.
