But only 1.9miles from Alta, we arrive at Dutch Ftutf—206 miles from San Francisco,our approach to which is heralded by the unmis-takable e\ddences of mining, seen in the up-turned face of the country. The water that came down in advance of thecars from Summit Valley and Kidds Lakes is nowutilized. It was gathered from the East Fork ofthe American River, from Monumental Canon andWilsons Ravine, and carried in Bradleys ditcharound Lost Camp Spur and emptied into BlueCanon, near Blue Canon Station, and taken upagain at the station and carried by ditches andflumes to Fort Point, where the railroad crossesit, and soon after one of the spurs is tunneled intwo places to find an easy grade, but it cannotdescend safely as fast as the cars, and at Pros-pect Hill passes through a tunnel 100 feet abovethe railroad, and is then emptied into CanonCreek, from which it is again taken up and dis-tributed by flumes or great iron pipes to themines we overlook at Dutch
