the distant waterand green trees beyond. The soil of this once desert region, now pro-duces the best of wheat, when the rains areabundant, but from its peculiar position on thenorth-east of the Coast Range, the necessaryrain is often wanting. A local adage is everyseven years a crop —worse than ancient Egyptsfamine But the land-owners are moving toconstruct a ditch 60 feet wide and 300 mileslong, to irrigate the entire valley on the westside of the river, and serve for transporting theproduce to the tide-water of Suisun Bay. Onceaccomplished this almost desert land, will easilysupport a population of 3,000,000. Fourteen miles south-we.st from this station isCorral Hollow or Pass, in the mountain range, atthe head of which are extensive coal mines, to-ward which a branch railroad extends five miles. Here an extra engineis taken to overcome thesteep grade of the Livermore Pass, in the MountDiablo Range. The soil is coarse sand and gravel, the finerparticles of which, and vegetation, too, it seems, have been blown away by the trade-winds, which, pent up by the long range, rush with concentratedfury over the summit of the pass, and sweepdown with devastating force into the vacuum onthe heated plains. Suddenly the train enters a tunnel, 1,116 feetlong, the only one between Sacramento and SanFrancisco, and is in total darkness for twominutes. Emerging, it soon arrives at AlUinioiitf—west of the summit of the MountDiablo Range, 56 miles from San Francisco, and 7-40 feet above the level of the sea. Thetraveler will see numerous gray squirrels stand-ing erect at the entrance to their homes. Theyare about as large as the fox-squirrel of the East-ern States, live in villages of tlieir own, are thepest of the farmer, have increased
