The laborers onthat day handled 25,800 cross-ties, 3,52o iron rails,55,000 spikes, 7,040 fish-plates, and 14,080 bolts,the weight of the whole being 4,362,000 pounds.Upon both roads, for a year previous, there hadbeen remarkable activitv-^ A total force of 20,000 to 25,000 workmen allalong the lines, and 5,000 to 6.000 teams hadbeen engaged in grading and laying the track orgetting out stone or timber. From 500 to 000tons of materials were forwarded daily fromeither end of the lines. The Sierra Nevadas suddenly became alive withwood-choppers, and at one place on the TruckeeRiver twenty-five saw-mills went into operationin a single week.
