LOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE. above the Lower Falls. Between them, theriver is in a canon whose depth is from loll to300 feet. Near the Lower Falls it is a succes-sion of rapids. The two falls are very unlike,but egually interesting, the Upper perhaps notpossessing as much of grandeur as the Lower.The height of the former is 140 feet. The river above is broken into rapids, and, reaching theedge, the entire volume of water seems to behurled off the precipice with terrific force,_ so that the mass is broken into most beautifulsnow-white drops, presenting, at a distance, theappearance of snowy foam. .Midway in itsdescent a ledge of rock is met with, which oar- lies it away from the vertical base of the preci-pice. The water lias worn a circular basin inthe hard rock. From any point, the view isstriking and picturesque. What it lacks in sub-limity is compensated for by its beauty.
