from the East. In the fall of 187G, a new road will be com-pleted, and stages be run to Forest Hill, 14miles, in two and one-half hours. The fare willbe 12.50. Grass Valley—is 16.74 miles distant, has apopulation of 7,000. It is the center of the bestgold quartz mining region of the State, and hasthe largest Protestant Church (Methodist Epis-copal) in the Sierra Mountains. It has also aCongregational Church, Roman Catholic, Epis-copal and Christian or Campbellite. Untilrecently, it had two banks, but at present hasnone. It is the center of large lumber, fruitand mining interests, has a daily paper, the Union and one weekly, the FoothillTidings. This city as well as Nevada, is reached fromColfax by the narrow gauge railroad, on whichtwo trains connect daily with the trains of theCentral Pacific.
