Cope, the route ends.There is a weekly mail, stage and express lineto the Island Mountain District, 75 miles duenorth. This is a placer gold field, discoveredin 1873, and it is estimated that $100,000 in gold-dust, were taken out in 1875. Three miles northof the Island Mountain District, is the WyomingDistrict, where valuable silver mines are said tohave been discovered. The chief lode is knownas the Mardis, which is owned by a Chicagocompany. A stamp mill is now being erectedthere. The mineral belt before alluded to, be-gins at the north end of the Goose Creek Range,and runs south-west about 160 miles. It isabout 60 miles wide. Tuscarora is also some-what noted as a placer field, while Aurora, anew district west of Cornucopia, is said to bevery promising. It is 10 miles from the lastnamed place to Am-ora. South from Elko there is a semi-weekly stage,mail and express route to Bullion City, the townof the Railroad Mining District. This town hasabout 150 people, and is distant 25 miles fromElko. Jhe ores of this district are smeltingores, and the town has two large furnaces forthe reduction of this ore. The principal mines are owned bj the Empire Company of NewYork. There is also a weekly stage line into theSouth Fork and Huntington Valleys—two richagricultural valleys, which are thickly settledwith farmers and stockmen.
