The country gradually slopes into thelake toward the west with an occasional drift ofsand near the shore, covered with the inevitablesage brush which we have had since leaving Lara-mie River. The cosy farm houses and the evi-dences of thrift everywhere visible, the growingcrops and ripening fruits, if in the summer—allconsi^ire to make a pleasant landscape, upon whichthe traveler can feast his greedy gaze, while theshadow of the mountains grows longer, and thetwilight deepens into night as we arrive at Salt Lake City,—the southern terminus ofthe road, 36 1-2 miles from Ogden. But of thiscity, more in another place. The Utah Central has been a paying roadfrom the start, and its business, as the years passby, is destined to make it better still. We havenot all the data at hand to show what it has done,but will give one or two illustrations. In 1873,its tonnage was as follows. Freights received,233,533,450 lbs.
