Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Original Scientists.png |
English: Philosopher and theologian William Whewell, computing pioneer Charles Babbage, astronomer John Herschel, and economist Richard Jones were all polymaths and inventors who revolutionized Victorian England by asserting that great minds in every field ought focus their energies on creating tangible means by which society could flourish, become automated, and thereby, more productive. Their collaborations stimulated the Royal Society and encouraged invention throughout England's industrial revolution. Individually they invented the computer, blue prints, calculator, cowcatcher, ophthalmoscope, photography, standardized use of scientific vocabulary, authored and translated books, and kicked the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) into high gear. England's reach during that time was nothing short of global. Their influence, therefore, stimulated peer-reviewed scientific discovery and created a new genre of abstract thinking. Whewell first coined the term 'scientist and dubbed he and his three counterparts 'scientists.' |
