Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Orbiston Babylon. For the inscription on the plaque, see 636109. This little pillar commemorates an ambitious but short-lived experiment in co-operative living. Inspired by the success of New Lanark, which incorporated the ideas of Robert Owen, Abram Combe was one of the prime movers behind the establishment of the Orbiston Community (nicknamed "Babylon") in 1825, with shareholders providing much of the funding. After the death in 1827 of Combe, debts mounted, funding dried up, and the little community quickly unravelled amid internal disputes.
