Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Old Rectory - Torbryan Taken from the footpath from Torbryan, that goes past The Old Rectory and beyond.
The Open Space Society say on their website "Our activist in Devon, Eric Mawer, has helped to save the ancient footpath alongside The Old Rectory at Torbryan near Newton Abbot.

The landowner, with Devon County Council, wanted to move the path away from the house on a steep zigzag route. We fought the plan, alongside the parish council, Ramblers’ Association and local residents, at a public inquiry. The inspector has concluded the path must stay where it is.

Says Eric: ‘The owners went to great lengths to prove that the path threatened their privacy and security and they failed. We argued that in fact the presence of the path gave added security.

‘They also tried to claim that there was a cave and cavities under the path that could cause catastrophic collapse, resulting in serious injury or death. However, despite their professional witnesses, the evidence was not compelling and we were able to discredit it.

‘The inspector agreed with us that the diversion was steeper with zigzags and that it would deter less able walkers who are able to use the present route.

‘So the path past the Georgian rectory, with its lovely views, will stay – thanks to our efforts,’ Eric declares."
