Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Old Penllyn Level Crossing Here the Padarn Railway, from Dinorwig Quarry to Port Dinorwig, crossed the Fachwen road. For a long time there were no barriers on the crossing and this eventually led to accidents. In 1899 a horse and cart were struck by the train and the company had to fork out £60 in compensation. A year later, a postal horse and cart were struck. The bill for that came to £32-10s. That event was still commemorated in a schoolyard rhyme decades later
'The quarry engine came by force
And at Penllyn she struck a horse;
The horse he belong to Dafydd Postman,
And the bill was sent to Mr Brinckman*.
  • Mr Brinckman (ex Mersey Docks & Harbour Board) was the then rather unpopular manager of Dinorwig Quarries. It was only after the fatal Bethel accident of the 1920s that gates were added and a gatekeepers box built.
As children we used to go to this crossing shortly before noon on Fridays during the holidays to see 'Y Garrij Felyn' (a canary yellow saloon car of 1895 vintage attached to the back of the slate train) go past. This carried the wages for the quarrymen and in true wild west fashion had two men riding shotgun on the verandah. The saloon car has survived and is housed at the National Trust's Railway Museum at Penrhyn Castle.
