In thosedays, as in 1905, the player himself was not dissatisfied with existingconditions; he still saw much in the sport that appealed to him.But the spectators had begun to clamor for something in the line ofplay that should be more visible in its progress and appeal moreto the laymans interest. As in that day, so in this, the publiceventually had its way and, what is still more evident, the player,once forced to change his tactics, has found a reward in a style ofgame that even he was obliged to confess before the season endedwas a less exhausting and better game in almost every way. Withthe opening of the play there came in a better spirit among thepiayers and a far better understanding. The effort
