Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is one of the three odeons which were built in ancient Athens (the other two were the Odeon of Pericles, built in the 5th cent. B.C. and the Odeon of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa built in the 1st cent. B.C.). The odeon was sponsored by Herodes Atticus, a very wealthy Athenian who was also an orator and an author. The family of Herodes received Roman citizenship under the emperor Claudius (A.D. 41-54) and Herodes became consul in A.D. 143. He was a friend of the emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-138) and the tutor of his successors, Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 161-180) and Lucius Verus (A.D. 161-169). The odeon was most probably built a little after A.D. 174 to honour the memory of Regilla, Herodes’ deceased wife, and it host up up to 5,000 spectators. The odeon was destroyed during the barbarian invasions of the 3rd century A.D. when the Heruli pillaged Athens (A.D. 267) and destroyed a large part of the city.
