d BlueWarblers. On this particular afternoon whilegoing through some heavy buck laurelin the hemlocks to get behind a treeon the edge of a deep pool I flusheda bird off its nest. This nest was 20inched up in the top of a low clusterof laurels. It was a bulky nest ofgrass and the four eggs were spottedand wreathed. It looked more like aMourning Warblers nest than any-thing I could think of, so I sat down,and in a few minutes the female re-turned. Owing to the shade and thestate of the weather and the fact thatshe kept low down in the laurels Icould not identify her and she didntlook just right for a Mourner. Several days later on a clear sunnyday I returned and was surprised tofind a Yellow-throat at home. It cer-tainly pays to positively identify allfinds. The Yellowthroat is one of ourcommonest and best distributed warb-lers in the summer and is found every-where in bushy or weedy places. THE OOLOGIST 45 huckleberry ridges it is one of tliefew birds to be found. It is entirely absent in heavy growth.It nests on the ground and in lowbrush. Its eggs 4 to 5 in number aremarked only by a few dark dots aboutthe larger end. This particular Yellowthroats nestdiffers entirely from the ordinaryYellowthroats nests in being in laurelin quite heavy hemlock timber. Thenest was larger than usual and theeggs unusually large. It is the onlyset of Yellowthroats that I ever foundthat was spotted and wreathed. Theyarrive the first week in May and de-part late in September. Very oftenthey are imposed upon by the Cowbird.R. B.
