Text Appearing Before Image:
they first alightedthey were packed so closely that onecould not see the ground. Almost atonce they spread out and began tofeed. I collected several birds on theoutside of the flock and at the reportof the gun the birds rose and circledaround us, fluttering down to the deadbirds. The majority of them weretypical (lettorales) a few were typicaltephocotiis and several others wereintermediates. They were in breedingdress; this plumage is gained by thewearing off of the silvery edging onthe ends of the brown feathers. Theirides in both sexes are hazel, the tarsiare black; the bill of the male is black;that of the female is dark, olivaceous-brown with a dusky yellow base. These birds were evidently workingup the mountains to their breedingground above timber line. From thevalley we could see the snow cladpeaks up Ashenola Creek, one of theirsummer ranges, and the deep snowthere showed clearly why they werestaying so late in the valley.
