shrill cries while guard-ing a nice clutch of four eggs. I canjust hear myself say to Pete, well 1reckon we will take this set, it sure-ly looks good. Last year we started in at Cam-bridge, Md. Had our canoe shippeddown. It was raining when we gotthere, but we had the collecting feverbad, it just seems as if somethinggets in your blood and you cant waittill you get started. Wasnt long,however, until we had supplies load-ed and had started. It surely wasgreat to be out again in our little six-teen foot canoe and feeling the Baybreeze, and being rocked up and downby each little swell. The tide andwind were- just right and we were go-ing along with them at a good clipwondering who would see the firstnest of the season. After about fivemiles of this, Pete who had beencarrying the glasses pointed out ablack dot way ahead of us. It wasntlong before we were under the nestwhich was in a large pine; but uponclimbing it we found to our regretthat there was only one egg in it so THE OOLOGIST 93

Then turned overthe canoe and after getting as dry aswe could, the water having pretty wellsoaked us, turned in. Next day we were up bright andearly. It was blowing hard, but therougher it was the better we liked it,just so it was running the right way.We wanted to make good time and geton the collecting ground. It waspretty rough, about five feet swellsand a little white cap on the top ofeach wave. I saw Pete look aroundat me to see if I thought it was toorough and with shore about half amile away.
