reight. A fine Solitary Sandpiper wasseen picking on the moss coveredwater and was easily secured. A good many Yellow-billed Cuckooswere in the willows and several weretaken which proved to be males. Twosets of Tree Swallows eggs, one offive and the other of six and a pairof the glossy greenish black maleswere secured. One nest of Prothono-taus containing six young was foundbut not disturbed. Bull, Black and Water Snakes wereseen on many of the willows and someapparently searching for nests as theyare not averse to a dinner of eightyoung birds or the eggs, as 1 haveoften discovered. A fisher brought mea few days ago a Bull snake that hecaptured on Grass Lake that was overseven feet long and on skinning itwas found to contain a whole familyof nearly half grown Bronze Grack-les. Returning to the landing and eat-ing our lunch we left the boat andwent up the lake on land; finding uphere the nests contained no eggs atall or only partial sets which we didnot care for. 110 THE OOLOGIST stump and over the water a Mallardsnest was found containing fourteeneggs, the duck being on the nest. Asthey looked much incubated, theywere not touched. Back in the densebig timber the fine notes of the Amer-ican Redstart was heard on everyside. Two males were taken. A Car-dinals nest was found in the ButtonBall bush but not molested. Our dog Heine chased somethingthrough the dense bush with muchbellowing, we supposed it to be arabbit. Coming up to where he hadtreed it, we were surprised to findhim twelve feet up in an old willowtree literally tearing the dead top outof it. It was limbed from the groundup and not hard to climb by an enter-prising dog. We were much surprisedto see a large mink dislodged out ofthe top of it by the dog and which hebarely missed. It ran down the treeand off to safety towards the lake,while the canine, who had to descendbackwards, was quite a while reach-ing terra firma.
