Text Appearing Before Image:
hey invariably break theegg and you will find the shell on yournext visit. I find one exception to this, however, in one nest in which I left anegg when I went back I found the egggone, no shell anywhere or any signon the lining of the nest where it hadbeen broken, and to deepen the mys-tery the pair never were seen aboutthis nest again that year. I alwaysthought they moved it to another nestsomewhere. As near as I can judge it takes fiveweeks for an eagle egg to hatch, andthe young are born with their eyesopen and up to a month old show no.fear of man but will eat readily of anyfood that you give them that is usual-ly in abundance on the nest. Theyoung are covered with greyish downand show no sign of feathers untilthree weeks old when their wings be-gin to sprout a few. While I am un-able to state exactly, it takes about 12weeks from the time of hatching untilthe young can fiy, and at that age areusually much larger than the parents. Oscar E. Bald Eagles nest and errs in itu, nest in iiine 125 feet up —Photo by Oscar E. Baynard 22 THE OOLOGIST The Red-shouldered Hawk of CayugaCounty, N. Y. In this locality of Cayuga County,New York, especially around the Cityof Auburn, the Red-shouldered Hawkis the predominating Buteo. Thereare no woodlands as a rule large, orwild enough for the Redtail, Sharp-shinned, or Broadwinged to breed in,although the latter are common mi-grants. However, there are exceptionsto all rules. In the Southern part ofour country we have a number ofheavily wooded hillsides, and here theRedtail is found breeding to some ex-tent; also I have found the wild littleSharpshinned Hawk breeding in thislocality, although very rare. I haveknown of no instances of the Broad-winged breeding. The Coopers Hawkis a fairly common breeder with usand one can usually collect severalsets of this species in the month ofMay. However, coming back to my topic, the Red Shouldered Hawk, I wouldsay that this bird is generally found
