wasthe 30th day of May and a time «trexpect young birds. I found a nestbuilt in a clump of ironweeds at thewoodside. The female flitted fromfive heavily spotted eggs as I ap-proached. Farther down the valley I foundanother nest built six inches alsovethe ground in a clump of raspberrybriers that grew in a slight openspace near the border of the woods.The female bird did not sit so close-ly here but left while I was some dis-tance away. This nest held five wellspotted eggs, which were slightly in-cubated. At several other suitable openspaces at the base of the mountainsI heard Golden-wings singing. How-ever, these places were so extensivethat a thorough search would requirea great deal of time. While the female Warblers are in-cubating the males spend a greatdeal of their time flitting about thetops of small trees uttering their faintdreamy songs.
