time gave ventto mournful screams and notes ofalarm. The female was by far thebravest of the two birds, allowing meto approach within fifteen feet of her.The male never came closer than fiftyfeet. I found the nest by allowing thefemale to settle. Then I would walkrapidly toward the spot where shehad disappeared into the grass. Eachtime I came closer to the spot andfinally after a great many tries, I sawthe four beauties about ten feet tomy right. The eggs measure as fol-lows: 1.51x1.10, 1.50x1.12, 1.49x1.12,and 1.45x1.13. The bird life on thisstream is fairly abundant, especiallyin localities where a spring emptiesinto a lake, as at Lake George. Onone of these spots in the west shoreof Lake George, the coots were presemin large numbers, but all species ofthe order Amseres were remarkablyscarce; I saw only half a dozen SaaupDucks and a couple of Mergansers. Navigation on the St. Johns is sad-ly hindered at times by great jams ofWater Hyacinths.
