According to Stones Birds of East-ern Pennsylvania and New Jersey(Page 30) the Cowbird (Molothrusater) is a common summer residentin the vicinity of Philadelphia, but,according to my experience as an ac-tive field ornithologist during the pastseventeen years in this locality, it israther a scarce summer resident, par-ticularly in the northeastern part ofPhiladelphia County. In this region,I have found its eggs and young onlyfifty-five times, or on an average ofthree nests a year, out of an examina-tion of about 4800 nests of birds inwhich the Cowbird has been known to

Certainly a low recordin a locality where the Cowbird issupposed to be a common breeder.And during 1913 I did not see a Cow-bird in the nesting season or find anyof its unwelcome eggs or young in themany birds nests I examined. I record below the few Cowbirdseggs and young I have found in birdsnests in the vicinity of Philadelphiaand shall have more to say in regardto several in another paper. It willbe noticed, however, that I have neverfound more than one Cowbirds eggor young bird in a nest. 1. June 12, 1897; Holmesburg, Phil-adelphia County, Pa.—One fresh eggin Red-eyed Vireos nest containingone fresh egg of the owner. 2. May 19, 1898; Gloucester Coun-ty, N. J.—One fresh broken egg in aBrown Thrashers nest (Oologist, 1912,p. 261). 3. May 25, 1898, Blue Grass, Phila-delphia County, Pa.—One half incu-bated egg in Song Sparrows nest con-taining two eggs of the owner, bothalso half incubated. 4.
