In northern New Jersey whereverthe wayside and bypaths are borderedwith low thickets and where this birdis sure of escaping detection, thischatterbox of the warbler family issure to be heard in outbursts of var-ied musical strains and gutteral notessuch as would do justice to any of theMimidae, the true mockers. This strange but handsome bird, in addition to its sedentary vocabulary,has a very ludicrous flight song whichin this locality he very seldom uttersand one must visit and be his com-panion many times before they willdetect him in the act of performingit. However, upon their arrival with.us, which takes place between May10th and 15th, this bird becomes a.regular and common inhabitant of itschosen habitats throughout this sec-tion throughout the summer untilSeptember 20th at which time they de-part for the South without ceremonyor ado. j Towards the end of May the observ-er may find their nests in various lo-cations always at low elevations andnever very far from a ready supply

Cerulean Warblers Nest Fifty feet up, 31, 1SG3 116 THE OOLOGIST of water in which they may be ableto enjoy frequent immersions andbaths. One pair of the polyglotswhose nest was located in a lowthicket of alders and catbriers at Has-kell, N. J., on May 28th, 1904, owingto its proximity to my residence, af-forded an excellent opportunity tostudy their homelife. This pair com-pleted their home, which was com-posed of grass, strips of bark andleaves and was lined with fine grass,just prior to my discovery of it. OnJune 3d the set was completed andconsisted of four white, distinctlymarked with numerous shades ofbrown, grey and faint traces of laven-der. During the period of incubation,which occupied fifteen days, the malewas never seen near the nest butcould be heard in the near vicinityperforming continually from earlysunrise to sunset, its multinoted songsand calls and protesting very vigor-ously my intrusions.
