rd-ing to the books. However, such isnot the case so far as our observationwith the birds shown above is con-cerned. Two of our birds have a welldefined collar and two have not. It is the smallest of the sub-speciesof Canada Geese. The smaller exam-ples at times being but little largerthan an ordinary Mallard duck. The home of this sub-species isalong the Western coasts of North America, breeding abundantly in theAleutian Islands and winters as farSouth as San Diego, Calif. Occasion-ally it comes East of the Rocky moun-tains, but .not often. It is the last ofthe geese to reach the far North. Butfew sets of eggs of this species thor-oughly identified can be found inNorth American collections. It has a peculiar note, from which itgets its name,—a harsh continuedhigh-pitched cackle which can beheard a very long distance, and ismore irritating than pleasant, and ap-parently bears no resemblance what-ever to the inspiring Honk, honkof its larger relative, the CanadaGoose. Text Appearing After Image:
174 Black Brant Branta nigricans. We present herewith a half tone ofa pair of these birds, which we haveliad for several years. When not han-dled nor disturbed, they become com-paratively tame, and do nicely in con-finement. But the least effort to be-come familiarly acquainted with themalways results in disturbance whichtakes them several days to get over. So far as known, the main breedingground of the Black Brant is on theArctic coast and the islands adjacent, near the mouth of the Anderson river, though other breeding colonies areknown. Its Eastern relative, the CommonBrant, is supposed to breed fartherNorth than any other living bird; atleast they have been found goingNorth at the highest altitudes everreached by man prior to the breakingout of the Cook-Peary controversy. This bird lays from four to six eggsand builds its nest on the groundsomething after the manner of aLoon. 32 THE OOLOGIST ;. iiiimi ^^^^ •■.iy.-7:-?r;< 1. -- -^ ■ ■ - i 175 Barnacle Goose Branta leucops
