ies, etc.,attracted. A. C. READ. A Trip Down the Nueva.s to the Sea. We were not taking the trip simplyfor pleasure, but to obtain pictures ofthe dredge in action at the mouth ofthe Nuevas River. During the firsttwo days the wind was blowing sohard and the sea rolling so much thatwe could not take the photographs. to get them by wading in the waterup to our waists, it still being toorough to work the camera in a smallboat. As the trips were made overthe same route and three days in suc-cession, I will take it up as though itwere but one trip. On May 17, about 6:30 A. M., Mr.Bridgen, the Isle of Pines Companysphotographer and myself as assistantleft the big grove in McKinley for thePort. After driving through openpine woods for a distance of aboutfour miles we arrived at Port McKin-ley where we were met by Commo-dore Clealand and his launch. The distance fromthe Port to the sea is but two and one-half miles, but so winding is the riverthat we almost boxed the compass.Many herons, ibises, pigeons andkingbirds were seen along the river.On the sand bars were killdeer andsandpipers. From the top of thedredge I took a view looking up themouth of the river and another ofthe beach at low tide just to thenorth. I stood on a point and watchedthrough the glass several cormorantsflying low over the sea and one grandold pelican sailing high above it. Thereturn trip was just as interesting. We arrived home at about 5:30 P. M.
