It is not neces-sary that the contributions should beeither lengthy or specially scientific.Short, newsy notes are always accept-able with us. Florida Jays. In Hillsbrook County, Florida, weget quite a number of the Florida Jays(Aphelocoma cyanen), but during thelast few weeks they have disappeared.They are the tamest birds here. No. 65—Nest and Eggs of American Coot. —Photo by Alex Walker of Armour, S. D. Nesting of the White ThroatedSparrow. The White Throated Sparrow is acommon breeder in this locality, thenesting season extending from May20th to August 15th. During this per-iod fresh sets can be taken at anytime, it having been definitely ascer-tained that the bird lays second sets.The first week in June appears to bethe best time for the first laying andabout June 15th for fresh sets of thesecond. The earliest nest was foundon May 22nd. 1910, with four eggs andthe latest on August 1st, 1909, withthree fresh eggs. As is well known the W. T. Spar-row spends the summer mostly inlowlying evergreen woods—openings,lanes, or glades in damp cedar woods being the favorite haunts ofthe species when nesting season setsin. In old winter wagon roads inthese woods, where the grass is longand plants and vines of various ord-ers are strewn about on the ground,one is almost sure to locate a nest ofthis beautiful spa
