But when upon the baresthint of intrusion upon its privacy, itdives noiselessly without disturbanceof the water with the rapidity of aflash of lightning, usually to appearno more within sight, it will be un-derstood that this is an old bird ina special sense of the term- 80 THE OOLOGIST Two nests of the European Magpie(Pica rustica) were noted. One ofthese was situated sixty feet from theground in a tall popular, while theother was but seven feet about thewater in a small bush on the edge ofthe lake. The latter nest was com-posed of large sticks placed on afoundation of mud and lined with root- fainter and fainter as the steamerswung far out into the lake and as anornithologist a feeling of regret cameover me, for I had probably seen thelast of the Valley of the Rhone andthe Black-headed gulls for many yearsto come.
