Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinoisand Nebraska. Short further says,We draw a line (to divide the species)from Connecticut westerly throughSouthern New York, Northern Penn-sylvania and Northern Ohio straightto the Rockies. In the December, 1907, Oologist, Ifind this from Mr. Alexander again:On May 5, near Gloversville, I founda rest of Migrant Shrike in a thornai)ple tree, ten feet up, containing sixeggs. In parenthesis Editor Shortasks, Was this bird not Excubitor-ides? (White-rumped Shrike.) Now Editor Barnes briefly tells Mr.Leach that his birds are MigrantShrikes, thereby endorsing what L. A.Fuertes had previously told Leach. Is there not someone who can speakas one having authority about thesebirds, this newly-made variety? Ithink many would like to have thisquestion settled for good. THE OOLOGIST ^-?CO , V?\«=> A Paddle Down The Nuevas River,November 20, 1909.The Nuevas river is a small butwinding river which flows tlirough Mc-Kinley, Isle of Pines, Cuba. One Sat-urday, three of us decided to take theboat and padJle down the river aways to see what birds we could. Sowe put some extra rope, a small hatch-et, and a heavy hunting knife togeth-er with something to eat and the shotgun. We finally got started about 9.00a. ni., rather late for the best observa-tion. Every turn in the river disclos-ed some new beauties. The river is lined on both sides withheavy jungles and royal palms. Sev-eral small rapids and log jams fur-nished excitement as well as noveltyto the trip. We paddled down the ■ river for about five miles, rested a halfhour and started back about twelve.We had to pole most of the way backbecause of the swift current.
