The Great Blue Heron.(Ardea herodias). The group of this splendid birdillustrated on the opposite page hasbeen presented to the Buffalo Societyof Natural Sciences by me. It tookseveral years of hard work, aided bymy son, Edward, to get the materialfor the same. TheHerons arrive here from the South inthe first days of April and start atonce to look over their previous nests,repairing and strengthening them fortheir occupancy. In the middle ofApril they start laying eggs. Abouta month later, the young appear andnow the work of getting nourishmentfor them is no easy matter. They haveto fly as far as fifty miles, and canbe seen near Grand Island and NavyIsland standing in Niagara River,watching foi- fish, with which they re-turn to thp young to satisfy their rav-enous appetites. The long flight isnecessary because it is impossible forthem to get down to the ground in theheronry on account of the ilense shrub-bery. A continuous croaking of the oldbirds is heard. it takes fully fromtwo to two and a half months untilthe young can take care of themselves,and to bring them down out cf theirnests is no easy problem.
