RAMSES To describe all the plates in this series would tire thereader, besides take more space than we can well spare ;we therefore introduce a copy of plate cxxxvii, in whichRamses IV is shown in a procession to the templeof Amun, the victims manacled, a portion being slung CHARIOT FROM THE FLORENTINE COLLECTION. Of the humane character of the ancient Egyptians,history presents ample proof ; but if we may trust theauthority of Diodorus Siculus (lib. 1, v. 58), and Pliny( lib. xxxiii, v 15), who says : Sesostfi Jfigypti rege,tarn superbo, ut prodatior annis quibusque sorte regessingulos e subjectis pungere cur rum soli (us atque ita tri-umphare. Sesostris tarnished his glory by an act of greatoppression, compelling captive monarchs to draw hischariot as he proceeded to celebrate his triumphs, and theTheban artists (as we see in the illustration) have not beenashamed to introduce a similar instance of cruelty in the sculptures of Medee-net Haboo.
