On the morning of May 16, 1871, the signal weigh anchorwas hoisted, when the American Asiatic squadron moved grace-fully out through the magnificent entrance of the harbor ofNagasaki, Japan. Its destination was the capital of Corea. A strict policy of non-intercourse with foreigners had been fol-lowed by Corea from time immemorial; protection and kindtreatment to people wrecked on the coast was far from certain.Moreover, in 1865, an American trading vessel that was attempt-ing to traffic with the natives was destroyed by them and the crewwere never heard of again. In 1867 an American war vessel sent to the Corean coast tocommunicate with the king to find out what remedy there was forthe situation, receiving no reply to its inquiries, came away as itwent. As a result, our government entrusted, in 1871, to its minister
