H., and on the top ofPeavey hill on the road between Farmington and Rochester, thetravelers attention is drawn to a boulder by the roadside whichbears this inscription : Henry Wilson, Vice-President U. S. A., Born Here, Feb. 16, 1812.

Eighty-nine years ago a small cottage stood where this bouldernow stands and here the early boyhood of Mr. Wilson was passed. Before continuing farther it may be of interest to state that Mr.Wilsons real name was Jeremiah Jones Colbath, but at the age of THE NEW HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE MONTHLY 123 twenty-one, by act of legislature, he had his name changed toHenry Wilson. This was done by the advice of the family hehad lived with, but for what reason it is not known. The parents of Mr. Wilson were very poor. His father was aday laborer and his mother was obliged to do washings to helpsupport their large family. In reference to his early years Mr. Wilson once said in public: I was born in poverty; Want sat by the cradle. I know what itis to ask a mother for bread when she has none to give. At the age of ten years the future vice-president was appren-ticed to a neighboring farmer to live until he became of age. By theterms of indenture he was to have one months schooling a year,his clothing, a
